Talents, Seasons, and Stewardship, part five

The longer I am at this amazing adventure of motherhood, the more I am convinced that women find the domestic life "boring" or a "waste of their talents" because they don't have the proper skills to manage a household or children. Further, many contemporary women lack the vision to really embrace the possibilities being a keeper at home affords them.

We are given talents by God (and "talents" is a generic word in the Bible, meaning any kind of gift God gives to us...it could be natural skills, or it could be finances, or it could be our children, and so forth), and we are commanded to exercise some stewardship over them. We are to care for them on behalf of the one who gave them to us. He didn't give us talents for us to just do with as we please, but to glorify Him.

There's an unspoken implication when speaking of "burying" one's talents if we only use talents at home. The implication is the false idea that talents only count when used in the public sphere, or when done for pay. From a Biblical perspective, stop for a moment and consider this. Does Jesus only count those things we do in public, getting attention, having a title, maybe even earning some pay? Jesus' response to those who were beneath ever using God's gifts in a private fashion, preferring to only "serve" when out in public, was "Verily they have their reward." (Matthew 6:2, 6:5, 6:16).

One of the things you can't always see clearly when you are at home with toddlers, questioning whether or not you've made the right choice, is this reality that in life there are different seasons. We tend to want to experience everything life has to offer right now, this instant. We tend to get a myopic view that, if this is what life is like right now, then it's always going to be like this. It isn't necessarily so...life comes at us in seasons.
Talents, Seasons, & Stewardship, Part One
Early motherhood was a huge adjustment for me. I was used to being productive, and keeping busy with different things, and I didn't really have much of a concept as to how to experience that "productive" feeling while home with my children. I was at home all day long with toddlers, and some days, before really catching a vision, I would allow the seeming monotony of my new life get to me. I was sure that being home with the children was the right thing to do, but I had very little foundation in this sort of thing. I was sure that it was a good thing to be home with my new little one, but on those wearying days when everyone was telling me otherwise, and doubts were creeping into my own mind, I'd start to second guess my decisions. Sometimes, especially when children are young, and the most mentally challenging thing I got to do all day is read Green Eggs and Ham without even looking at the words, I did not necessarily feel as though I was accomplishing very much with what God has given me, and too many people stood around reinforcing this thought. However, we're not to go by our feelings, but walk by faith, based on His Word.
